The new MacBook Air
We learned a lot from iPad. The new MacBook Air is proof. It’s designed around all-flash storage for better responsiveness and reliability. It features a trackpad with full Multi-Touch support. And though it’s incredibly thin and light, its large battery gives you portable power that lasts for hours.
A truly mobile device needs to be light, thin and strong enough to take with you wherever you go. It also needs to perform quickly, spring to life instantly and have enough battery power to keep up with you. It should have no spinning hard drive, no optical drive and no unnecessary parts. All of that is true of iPad. And now, it’s true of Apple’s most mobile notebook ever: MacBook Air.
MacBook Air continues its legacy of firsts with something entirely new for any Mac: flash storage. Standard. In fact, the new MacBook Air is designed completely around flash storage. But in a totally different way. Typically, flash storage is housed in a package that’s the same size as a conventional hard drive. Yet the flash chips themselves occupy a very small portion of that housing. Getting rid of the hard drive enclosure and using only the parts that matter — the actual flash chips — frees up about 90 percent more space. And just like that, there’s room for other important things, like a bigger battery. Now you have a notebook that weighs practically nothing and runs for hours on a single charge. That’s mobility mastered.
No one knows Multi-Touch technology better than Apple. Introduced with the very first iPhone and taken even further with iPad, Multi-Touch is now part of practically every Apple device. It’s simply the best and most personal way to interact with your software. And the optimal way to experience Multi-Touch on a notebook is through a trackpad. That’s precisely the case with MacBook Air. Now you can perform more gestures than you have fingers on a roomier, all-glass surface that’s smooth to the touch.
If you looked inside MacBook Air, you’d see something remarkable: how much space we devoted to the battery. Apple engineers were able to fit all the computer components on one of our smallest logic boards ever. Removing the flash storage enclosure and placing the flash chips on the logic board freed up even more room. And voila: space for a bigger battery. FaceTime Camera
The FaceTime camera inside the MacBook Air unibody display is even thinner than the one inside iPhone 4.
When MacBook Air first debuted, it was groundbreaking in many ways. Chief among them was the precision unibody enclosure. Now that same engineering process comes to the MacBook Air display. Just like the main enclosure, the display housing is crafted from a single piece of aluminium, with all the structural elements machined directly into it. Total unibody construction means a less complex design with fewer parts. That makes MacBook Air exceptionally thin and light, yet still durable enough to handle the rigours of everyday use.

Corner to corner and pixel by pixel, the display on the new MacBook Air is both an engineering feat and a design breakthrough. It measures a mere 4.86 millimetres thin, yet the resolution is so high, you’ll feel like you’re looking at a much larger screen. And with good reason. The 11-inch MacBook Air features a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution greater than that of a typical 13-inch notebook, while the 13-inch MacBook Air wows with a resolution equivalent to a typical 15-inch notebook.
FaceTime Camera.

Hidden inside the wafer-thin MacBook Air display is another engineering achievement — the FaceTime camera. It’s so thin (even thinner than the camera on iPhone 4) you barely notice it, but it’s incredibly capable. Trojan horses, worms, email viruses. The digital world can be a scary place. Thankfully, a Mac isn’t susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers. Mac OS X comes with built-in defenses that keep you safe, without any work on your part. And when a potential security threat arises, Apple responds quickly by providing software updates and security enhancements you can download automatically and install with a click.
Wireless networking made pick-and-choose easy.
Connecting to a wireless network with your MacBook Air couldn’t be easier. One click of the AirPort icon in the menu bar gives you a list of available Wi-Fi networks. Select the one you want to join and you’re up and running.
Automatic backup saves the day.
And the week, month and year.
Backing up is essential. Yet you probably don’t do it as often as you should. That’s why your MacBook Air bears the burden of backing up for you. Energy Efficiency
MacBook Air is designed to be energy efficient right out of the box. It’s even earned the EPA’s ENERGY STAR qualification for its low power consumption.
Efficient power supply.
MacBook Air includes a highly efficient power supply that reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your computer. Lower power consumption reduces energy bills and lessens the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.
Advanced power management.
Unlike a lot of Windows-based PC systems, MacBook Air uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power. Mac OS X activates sleep mode on already energy-efficient LED-backlit displays. And it balances tasks across both central processors and graphics processors. Mac OS X never misses a power-saving opportunity, no matter how small. It even regulates the processor between keystrokes, reducing power between the letters you type. That’s just one of many ways Apple manages small amounts of power that add up to big savings.
ENERGY STAR qualification.
MacBook Air meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA in their ENERGY STAR 5.0 qualification. ENERGY STAR 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer’s typical annual power consumption.
Mac OS X even regulates processor activity between keystrokes, saving milliwatts of power.
Eliminating Toxic Substances
It’s what MacBook Air doesn’t have that makes it more environmentally friendly. It’s free of many harmful toxins like mercury, arsenic, BFRs and PVC.
Fewer toxins.
The greatest environmental challenge facing the computer industry today is the presence of arsenic, brominated flame retardants (BFRs), mercury, phthalates and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in products. Apple engineers have worked hard to eliminate BFRs and PVC from MacBook Air circuit boards, internal and external cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives and more. And they’ve eliminated many other toxins that are a common part of notebook computer manufacturing — choosing, for example, mercury-free backlighting and arsenic-free glass for the MacBook Air display.
Recyclability
Because MacBook Air is made from aluminium, it’s more likely to be recycled and reused at the end of its long, productive life.
Recyclable materials.
Apple has minimised the waste when MacBook Air reaches end of life through its ultra efficient design and the use of aluminium, which recyclers can reuse for other products.
EPEAT Gold
MacBook Air has earned EPEAT Gold status for its responsible manufacture, energy efficiency and recyclability.

The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses and how it’s designed and manufactured. Through its innovative and environmentally friendly design, MacBook Air has earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold.

Apple’s life cycle analysis accounts for all emissions associated with our products. That includes raw material extraction, manufacturing, packaging, transportation, a three- or four-year period of use, and recycling. In the course of this analysis, we determined that more than 95 percent of Apple’s total greenhouse gas emissions come from the products we make.
